Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service written by Craig W. Stanfill is the first book of the AI Dystopia series. It is a science fiction book that tells a story about the future in which every aspect of life is closely controlled by artificial intelligence. AI decides what you eat, what you wear and who you date. The main character, Kim, is a young and ambitious woman who works for The Artificial Intelligence Company, where she helps surveil other citizens and looks for any cases of lawbreaking. At the beginning of the story, Kim follows orders without questions. However, one day she and her close friend, Shan, stray from the beaten path during one of their trips and soon find themselves having to face the consequences of their actions. Kim is then given a secret mission that allows her to peek inside the world of AI and its secrets, secrets that also concern Kim herself. This begins her journey of self-discovery and fighting against corrupted civilisation.
I think it is an excellent book. The author presented the world in a compelling way which allowed me to completely immerse myself in it. I liked the pacing of the events. The story starts rather slow but then, as soon as the main character discovers that the world she lives in has its mysteries, it swings into high gear. Apart from that, I also liked the main character and how she was written. Her character development is presented in a very sensible and smart way. It allows the readers to not only understand her and her actions but also to relate to her in a lot of ways. Moreover, the book also contains some moral discourse that I thoroughly enjoyed. For example, the interactions between Kim and Kimberly (the AI Kim has to train) or between Kim and the Director of the company can also make you question the rules that govern the real world and how AI can affect it.
There is only one thing I found to be a shortcoming. While reading the book, I often found myself questioning how the world Kim lives in even came to be. The author implements some background information on it but I feel like the story would be even better if more explanation was given. But then again, the author might be planning to include it in the next books. I hope he does.
In the light of what I have stated above, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I had a great time reading it. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that it is professionally edited.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes science fiction and dystopian stories. However, it must be noted that it contains sexual scenes and the topic of sexuality; therefore, I recommend it to mature readers.
