[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
Let us hope Lord Medorath killed himself before his trial. Let us hope they buried him in a deep grave. Lord Meldorath, the powerful mage, chose Hillport and instilled terrible fear in its residents. He is everywhere. The residents feel him inside them and hope beyond hope that he exists no more.
The golden age of Voulhire sets to shine brighter with the King's plans for the rural town of Hillport. Eldus has been appointed as the Lord to exploit his connections and bring Hillport to its undoubted potential. A better funded education system, hospitals, and supported fish trade can make Hillport the envy of the whole kingdom.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a page-turner. I enjoyed how it combined the world of magic, political power struggles, and daily human grinds. The characters were thoroughly developed despite their diverse backgrounds. I especially liked how the King played the power game while trying to push Voulhire closer to its full potential. The Riva Rohavi rebels had a unique way of causing anarchy and terror while dancing. The rebels employed fresh organizational and attack strategies. They were free and terrifying. The author also did a great job explaining the existence of two worlds, the physical and the magical world, and how mages draw their magic from the magical world.
Despite overall liking the book, throughout, I felt like I was reading an introduction and not a story with a beginning and an end. Although there were a lot of plot twists and exciting events, it felt as if I had not yet reached the actual story. I also did not enjoy how Galen did not feel like a main character at all. He ran for his life and came to Voulhire to inherit his uncle's forge, but we have no idea how he affects Voulhire. There is more to this story. I hope the next book in the series will explain some of the untold mysteries.
I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The book was interesting, well-written, and engaging. I was not able to find any errors. It is a book rich in characters and imagination.
I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy politics, tactics, underground rebellions, magic, and mystery. It is worth noting that this book includes a bit of violence.
