Artificial Intelligence (AI) could make a new totalitarian society beyond any dark fascist nightmare imaginable. Artificial Intelligence may also pose a threat to human existence considering the number of things they are capable of doing. Who controls them? How powerful are they compared to humans? Imagine being in the midst of a world controlled by AIs.

Kim is a promising specialist in the field. Having performed excellently in school, she gets an opportunity to work with an AI institution. This seemed an exciting opportunity, but she later finds herself sad, lonely, and desperate to leave. She however can’t leave; since the AIs control her life - where she goes, her relationship, what she eats, and even who she dates.

Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a work of fiction illustrating a dystopian society existing in the far future. Children are taken from people just after they are born. People cannot hide since there is an identification chip attached to each. Kim seeks a way to change things but this doesn’t go unnoticed. She longs for a different world. She always has sleepless and restless nights; even with everything she has- a decent apartment, friends, and a good job. She is tasked with developing a clone of herself (Kimberly) and enjoys every bit of their interaction. She excellently works on the project, impressing the manager but still, this doesn’t give her joy. Kim looks back to the happy days, and her relationship with Shan brings back sweet memories. Will their relationship survive the constant surveillance? Will she ever find freedom?

The author is a good narrator; each character is well described. I was also impressed by the author’s creativity in coming up with activities and characters. The first section of the book was essential in laying a foundation for the entire book. I liked Kim’s determination, loyalty, and desire for change. She worked hard to gain freedom. I also enjoyed learning about both the advantages and disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence. The inclusion of the unrealistic ‘terms of service’ at the beginning helped me understand most concepts in the book.

The book seemed slow at first, and some readers may take a while before getting the flow of the narration. It was however exceptionally edited and I didn’t find any spelling mistakes or grammatical errors that could hinder me from enjoying it.

I would like to rate this book 5 out of 5 stars, following the creativity of the author, and its applicability in the imagination of the readers.

Tech lovers will love this book. Anyone interested in learning more about Artificial Intelligence can also benefit from this work of fiction.
