[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is an epic fantasy novel. This novel is first in the We are Voulhire series. This book is jam-packed with social, political, and literary mysteries.
The battle of the princes started when Galen Bray was eight years old. Galen's wealthy uncle, who was put to death, left him an estate and significant gold in Magnum Caelum. Hillport is one of four towns under the control of King Wilhelm Arcolo of Voulhire. Within a month, this lovely village lost both of its rulers. Lord Eldus was assigned to lead the reconstruction of Hillport by King Wilhelm. The first Lord of Hillport was assassinated by magician turned captain Meldorath, who then assumed control. Hillport is a chaotic, corrupt city as a result of Meldorath continuing to govern it through magic. Soldiers were dispatched on King Wilhelm's orders to bring Meldorath for trial. Some thought Meldorath was assassinated during his route to court for his trial, others thought he was hiding. Nobody is aware of his location. Galen was attempting to resurrect his uncle's forge.
The level of suspense in this book was something I really enjoyed. This book has fantastic world-building. The setting for an engrossing fictional universe is progressively built up by the author. The character development in this book is something I enjoyed too. I felt as though I was inside the characters' heads while reading this book, which made it easier for me to comprehend who they were. A map was initially provided to explain the layout, development, and culture of the kingdom. This is also useful for knowing the logistics and length of time it takes the characters to go. A description of the book's keywords and names is also included.
There was nothing about this book that I could really dislike. The unexpected story turns and all the riddles the author left for the upcoming book in the series to answer were what I enjoyed most in this novel. I am eager to start the following book when it’s out.
The book was professionally edited because I didn't find any typos or mistakes in it. Both the first person and third person narrators are used in this book. As a result, I give this novel 5 out of 5 stars. For those who enjoy science fiction and high fantasy, I recommend this book. Because there are instances of profanity and a violent sequence in the book, it is not advised for younger readers.
