Review of Terms of Service
Over the last decade, the technology industry has experienced a growth spurt, and yes, growth is good, but it could be a disaster if left unchecked. There is no doubt that artificial intelligence is the way of the future. AIs have opened the door for more and more technological advancement. Man programs AI, and they serve us; that's the cycle. But what if this cycle is reversed? What if AI programs people and we serve them instead? Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill center on this very idea.
Kim lives in a world that is ruled by AI; it dictates everything about the people, like their food, clothing, sexual life, and even their pronouns. Those who agree to these "terms of service" and adhere strictly to the guidelines get rewarded with points; the higher your points, the higher your social status. If a person breaches the AI's guidelines, then points are deducted from them, which in turn lowers their social status. The food you eat, the clothes you wear, the job you do, and so forth, are all dependent on your social status, making the rich obedient and the poor vice versa. One day, Kim breaches the guidelines but is not penalized due to some sort of glitch in the AI; this would set her on course to discover some shady secrets about the AI, compelling her to question her own reality.
This book was an entertaining read for me; I never experienced a lull while reading it. There are so many things to like about this book, but the technological experience was the best thing I enjoyed about it. The machines and devices in this book astounded me; the concept behind them was brilliant. Making up fictional devices is one thing, but writing extensively on their working mechanisms is entirely different. It's no surprise that the author has a doctorate in artificial intelligence. I am really looking forward to reading his other sci-fi-themed books.
The only thing I disliked about this book was the erotic content, and although this book is set in a dystopian era, I did not fancy the words chosen by the author to portray the sex scenes; I felt they were too sensitive and unnecessary.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars; there are no errors in this book. It was perfectly edited. I recommend this book for people who love sci-fi-themed books. I am also recommending this book for those who have an interest in artificial intelligence.
