[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
Have you ever wanted a fresh start? Have you ever wanted to go somewhere new to start over? We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz tells the story of Galen Bray, a young man from the Land of Princes. The Land of Princes is currently battling a civil war. The war causes hunger, famine, poverty, and crime to increase.
Galen gets invited by his uncle to a new city called Voulhire. Seeking a better life, he agrees to go to this new land. Galen joins a crew heading there, and they sail for over a week before arriving at Magnum Caelum. Galen is greeted with unfortunate news as he learns about the death of his uncle. He inherits his uncle's house, forges, and money. Rowan, his uncle's enforcer, helps him get acquainted with the city. They visit the forge, where they discover the manual left behind by his uncle.
The author takes his time to introduce the characters. It ensures that they are adequately developed and enables readers to understand the decisions made by the characters. The world-building was profound. I must commend the author for being so creative with it. It opened up different possibilities for the author to think about.
I like that the book is written from different perspectives, which helps the readers understand them better. I also like how every character has a role to play and isn't just used to fill the plot. Even the secondary characters played roles vital to the plot, making it a well-rounded story. My favorite character was Galen. He was a young man who had suffered all his life but never gave up. He used the new opportunity to get a better life for himself. He was hard-working, intelligent, diligent, and loyal. What I liked the most about him was his honesty. He was never afraid to say the truth, regardless of whose feelings he might hurt. I also liked Rowan's character. He was a good friend to Galen. We all need someone like that who watches our backs constantly. What I liked the most about Galen was his humor; he was so funny and made me laugh so hard while reading the book.
I had no complaints about the book. I found no errors, which indicates that it was well-edited. I happily give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It was interesting and full of suspense. I recommend it to lovers of mystery, adventure, and action.
