Like many other eight-year-olds, Hannah looked forward to learning and playing with her classmates. She enjoyed reading so much that her general knowledge and vocabulary were on the level of kids who were a couple of years older than her. As a result of her being smart, she was targeted and bullied. The bullying affected her personal life and school work, and it was later discovered that she has an auditory processing disorder. Canaries Among Us explores methods that can be implemented to address bullying. The book also delves into the various learning disabilities.

Bullying is a multifaceted and cruel act that affects more than just the bully and the victim. Kayla Taylor does a fantastic job of uncovering the layers of bullying. She shows how schools often have policies and mission statements that convey a zero-tolerance stance on bullying but lack the resources, support, and knowledge to carry out the necessary actions when faced with bullying. Kayla showed the weaknesses and blind spots of schools, teachers, and parents in their approach to tackling bullying and accommodating learners with various learning disabilities. This approach was enlightening and promoted accountability at all levels.

The book is structured logically, making it easy to follow as it unfolds. The language used is easy to comprehend, and all the concepts mentioned are explained in detail. In Kayla’s quest to learn more about Hannah’s learning disability and the impact of bullying on her mental health, Kayla conducted extensive research and shared her findings with the readers. There is no one-size fits all formula for parenting children, but I like that Kayla highlights the need to understand your children and their unique needs and embrace their individuality.

Kayla has also done an amazing job of teaching readers about the complex subject of learning challenges or disabilities. As she delves deeper into the complexities of learning disabilities, readers also learn and journey with her. There is absolutely nothing I disliked about this book. I am rating it 5 out of 5 stars and recommending it to all parents with children of school-going age. The book is edited impeccably, as I did not pick up any errors. It is a helpful, enlightening, and handy tool for parents who are navigating life with children who are facing challenges in their school life.

If you are a parent who has a child (or children) with dyslexia, ADHD, auditory processing disorders, or any other learning disability, then this book is for you. It will equip, empower, and teach you how to navigate this journey.

Kids are sensitive and vulnerable beings who need to be protected. I'm glad Hannah had a present parent who tried to understand her and raise her up appropriately.

I was also happy to see Hannah's mother stand up for her daughter the way she did. Thaks for stopping by!
