[Following is a volunteer review of "Apollo's Raven" by Linnea Tanner.]
Apollo's Raven is a historical fantasy novel with a twist of romance and action. The book starts with the main character, Princess Catrin, who uses her magical powers to uncover a serious threat to her royal family and their kingdom. Her evil half-brother, who was banished from the family’s kingdom, has returned with a mass of Roman soldiers. It is not long before Catrin’s father, King Amren, is dealing with the brutal forces of the Romans head-on. Catrin must watch over the son of a Roman senator while her father deals with the dangers his kingdom is presented with. Catrin finds herself forming a deep connection to the son, someone who she is supposed to be enemies with. Through their relationship, Catrin begins to uncover secrets about her family’s past and the events leading up to the banishing of her half-brother. What dark secrets will Catrin discover? Why did her brother leave their kingdom? Will she choose to fall in love even if it means losing her family? Will Catrin and the Kingdom of Cantiaci find peace with the Romans? These questions can only be answered by author Linnea Tanner in her book, Apollo's Raven.
This was a great read. I thought the plot of this book was unbelievably exciting and filled with so many unexpected twists. I applaud the reader for being able to keep me guessing about what was going to happen next. I never found myself able to predict what was on the next page, which I loved. The complex and dynamic plot made the book very fun to engage with. I also really enjoyed the build-up of the relationships in this story. Tanner did a great job establishing the characters and then developing their relationships from there. I found it very fun to follow along as the relationships between certain characters progressed throughout the book.
There was not much to dislike about this book. My only critique would be regarding the length of the book. I feel like the author could have told the same story in fewer pages. There were just some descriptions and buildups that could have been left out. This might have made the book easier to engage with throughout the entire story. I found some parts of the book lulling on slightly. However, the majority of the book was extremely fast-paced and high energy, so this small criticism did not take away from my overall opinion of the book at all.
Overall, this was a very fun book to read. I loved the plot, characters, and the taste of mystery that the book included. I also applaud the author’s writing ability. This book sounded extremely professional and included a great variety of strong and descriptive words. I found no grammatical errors, which makes me believe that this book was professionally edited. For the reasons stated, I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars.
If you are someone who enjoys fantasy novels, then I would highly recommend reading this book. I would also recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance, considering this book also contains a great love story mixed in. There are many graphic scenes that might be hard for some people to read. Please make sure you are okay with violence before reading this book!
