Matthew Tysz writes We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies. It tells the story of a refugee, Galen, arriving in the kingdom of Voulhire, perhaps an allegory for the reader themselves in the first of this series. The kingdom is peaceful but is threatened when the refugee arrives by enemies including the evil Lord Meldorath.

It follows different storylines from different time periods through the viewpoint of different characters, such as King Wilhelm and Lord Eldus Alderman. The characters are relatable and try to do right by others by their actions, with King Wilhelm being an example of a King who feels the burden of his responsibilities. There is strong background and historical context which is necessary to tell the story and adds to the readers’ experience. The author uses the concept of magic but blends it with psychology. This fusion of fantasy and reality occurs throughout the book to create an interesting backdrop to the characters and the kingdom itself.

The reader needs to be patient as the plot takes some time to build up, however this is worthwhile when the differing narratives start to link together. Although primarily a science fiction work and primarily aimed at that audience, readers of thrillers and adventure stories will also find enjoyment in it as there are elements that would appeal to them within the plotlines. If the reader does not like long, slow build-ups with complex narratives then I would not recommend this book. This is a style that will either appeal or not and will come down to the individual preferences of the reader.

The book is recommended for adult audiences who enjoy a mixture of genres and have the ability to stick through a book, allowing it to build up gradually until the many moving parts are weaved together. I enjoyed the blend of modern political themes set in an ancient, alien world. I would not recommend the book to younger audiences due to the explicit nature of some of the themes or anyone who struggles with content of that nature.

The author has taken and extremely interesting, complex idea and executed on it well. There were hardly any mistakes. The book was clearly extremely well edited. I am happy to rate We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies 5 out of 5 stars. I look forward to reading the next book in the series and learning more about the kingdom of Voulhire.
