Review of Dagger's Destiny
Dagger's Destiny is a novel in the historical fiction genre. It is the second book in the series, "Curse of Clansmen and Kings." Catrin has been found guilty of treason for having an affair with Marcellus, a Roman. She is to suffer the full weight of the law, and the punishment for treason is death. Will the king really kill his daughter?
Marcellus arranges for the secret release of Princess Vala in order to save Catrin from the death penalty. Marrock learns of Marcellus' plan and ambushes the squad while they are on transit. Catrin pledges her fealty to King Amren. She is sent away from the palace to train, and only when she proves her loyalty will she be welcomed back to the palace. Marrock and his wolf pack storm Mor's wedding with Vala's decapitated body. King Amren believes Marcellus has deceived him and declares war. Once again, Princess Catrin is torn between duty and love.
After reading Apollo's Raven, I was eagerly anticipating the second volume, and I must say that I am not disappointed; instead, Dagger's Destiny has exceeded all of my expectations. This book takes the reader through the self-discovery of Princess Catrin. She is able to discover important aspects of her gift. She now regards it as an asset and not something to be scared of. I admire Catrin's courage and wit. I liked how supporting characters like Ferrex and Myrddin were included in this volume. Marrock's character was fully explored. Readers now understand the depth of his vile nature. Overall, I am pleased with this book. It was well researched and creatively written. The glossary at the end of the book was very appreciated. It helped smooth my understanding of some scenes in the book.
The constant repetition of the fact that Catrin and Marcellus made love bothered me. It seemed like the author did not trust the reader enough to remember that piece of information, thus the need to stress it throughout several chapters of the book. Other than this, I have no other complaints. I look forward to reading the next book, Amulet’s Rapture. Linnea Tanner has mastered the art of leaving her audience wanting more. This book was professionally edited. I found only one minor error, and it did not distract me from reading.
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It is not easy to keep readers engaged throughout a series, but the author has achieved this feat. This book is a fascinating read, and so it deserves a perfect rating. The book is better suited for audiences interested in fantasy, magic, and history. It does contain sexually explicit scenes and several instances of profanity, so it is not suitable for young readers.
