[Following is a volunteer review of "Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula" by R.F. Kristi.]
Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula by R.F. Kristi is an interesting children's book where cats (Inca, Fromage, Cara, Monk, Charlotte, Terrance, and Polo) are featured as the characters. This is an interesting book that details the story of the Inca detective cat family and how they traveled to South Korea for a cooking competition and ended up trying to rescue Ji and her dog, Bo-Mi, who were trapped in North Korea. The story in this book starts as the Inca cat family is invited by Le Cordon Bleu to a French patisserie competition that was hosted in South Korea. On getting to South Korea, the cat family discovered that their host, Ye-Jun, has a sister, Ji, who was trapped in North Korea because they were not quick enough to return to South Korea before the completion of the border fence between North and South Korea. The cat family volunteers to help rescue Ye-Jun's sister. Did they succeed in rescuing Ye-Jun's sister? What was the outcome of the competition that took them to South Korea? To find the answer to the aforementioned question, you would have to read the rest of this book.
In this book, I saw compassion, love, and empathy on display. Ye-Jun volunteers to accommodate the cat family without asking for anything in return, and to pay him back, the cats volunteer to help bring her sister and her dog back.
This book has 122 pages and could be finished in one sitting. The illustrations made the reading fun for me. I was able to look at the illustrations and visualize what the author was saying. The illustrations will keep any child who intends to read this book hooked.
The flow of the story in this book is very smooth, which shows me how great the author is at storytelling. The editing of this book was professionally done, as I encountered a few errors while reading it. The character development in this book is top-notch, and I would choose Fromage as my main character because he has a way of sensing what will happen in the future. Judging from the aforementioned, I would award this book a rating of five out of five stars.
The recommended audience for this book would be children between the ages of 8 and 10. Since the story in this book is told with cats as the characters, cat lovers would find the story in this book insightful.
