[Following is a volunteer review of "Niching Up" by Chris Dreyer.]
Niching Up: The Narrower the Market, the Bigger the Prize written by Chris Dreyer is a book about the advantages to developing a niche or specialization for your business even within a business category.
Mr. Dreyer started a digital marketing agency working in the legal industry with search engine optimization (SEO) and even more specifically working with legal firms that specialize in Personal Injury cases.
The book begins by sharing with the readers what Niching Up actually is. He does state early in the book that Niching Up may not be for everyone. He goes into details from there. He shares the seven advantages to this throughout the book. He devotes a chapter to each of the advantages for the reader to really understand how this can benefit any business. I thought he was very insightful to really begin the book in the first chapter reviewing the potential seven "cons" or disadvantages that the reader may have of why Niching Up isn't a worthwhile option. By bringing these cons or disadvantages out early in the book, Mr. Dreyer is noting that there are potential disadvantages to Niching Up, but he then goes into detail how these "cons" could really be a non-issue. He then spends the rest of the book explaining the seven advantages and really how they go together for complete effectiveness.
I really liked the conversational flow of his writing which made the book very easy to read. The chapters transitioned very naturally. This led me to continue reading the next chapter as I wanted to learn more. I have read numerous business books over many years that was more like reading a textbook or reference book and I never finished them. He used several stories to illustrate his points. He gave potential examples from other industries, sports, movies and games to drive his point home. This was effective as if he would have only used examples from the legal industry, this could have lost several readers to see how effective Niching Up can be!
I wish he would have spent more time explaining in more detail what his firm actually did as I had to do some other research to better understand the specifics of the company he is the founder and CEO as I didn't understand Search engine optimization at all as I started reading the book.
I would give Niching Up 5 out of 5 stars. The book was concise, informative and easy to read. This book should be a must read for anyone involved in marketing for a new or existing business.
