"Terms of Service" was exactly the kind of story I love to find in science fiction. In Craig Stanfill's imaginative world, the protagonist Kim's journey takes a surprising turn as she begins to program powerful artificial intelligences. As she delves deeper into the world of AIs, she begins to question her assumptions about the differences between humans and machines. She is also forced to question the strict rules for human society laid out by superiors at her company and in government, as it becomes her job to teach AIs to recognize rule-breaking and bring in the culprits for punishment.

Kim's realization that the line between humans and AIs is not as clear-cut as she once believed is a fascinating and thought-provoking aspect of the novel. The author explores the idea that AIs have the potential to become sentient beings, capable of emotions and independent thought. This raises important questions about the ethical implications of creating machines that are capable of mimicking human intelligence.

Through Kim's experiences, the author explores the theme of technology's impact on humanity, as well as the moral consequences of forcing people to shed their distinctive characteristics such as sexual orientation, fashion sense, food choice and even the pronoun "I." Initially happy to follow all the rules of society in exchange for a stable job and social rating, Kim begins to rail against the powers that be and discovers the very depths of the world in which she lives.

Overall, "Terms of Service" is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that challenges readers to consider the ethical implications of technological advancement and the judgement of fellow individuals. Kim's journey of self-discovery and her changing attitudes towards AIs make for a rich and engaging story, and the book's exploration of the complex relationship between humans and machines is both fascinating and timely. I can't wait to read the next one! 4/5
