[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
The tale of Hillport and Voulhire is a gripping narrative that weaves together elements of political corruption, mystical powers, and the indomitable human spirit. It all commences with the appointment of Judge Eldus as the new ruler of Hillport, a Voulhirian settlement that has been shrouded in a dark past. Despite the assurance of King Wilhelm that the previous lord, Meldorath, is no more, his name continues to hold sway over the realm. On top of that, Hillport is under threat from the notorious rebel faction Riva Rohavi, who are known for their pillaging and destructive tendencies.
In the midst of this turmoil, a young man named Galen Bray arrives in Magnum Caelum to take over his late uncle's forge and learn the trade. Along with his companions, Galen embarks on a journey of self-discovery, but they soon find themselves up against powerful and dangerous adversaries.
Mr. Tysz has done a remarkable job of crafting an enthralling tale with well-rounded characters and an intricately detailed setting that immerses the reader in the world of Voulhire. Right from the beginning, the author's meticulous attention to detail is apparent, with a map of Voulhire that assists the reader in envisioning the country and its various towns. The book is a captivating mix of magic, action, and adventure that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from the opening pages to the finale.
The story explores themes of perseverance, courage, and the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. It takes readers on a thrilling adventure through a fantastical world where the boundaries between good and evil are blurred and where the fate of entire communities is often at stake. As the characters traverse the complex and dangerous terrain of Voulhire, they will encounter challenges and obstacles that will test their mettle, bravery, and resolve.
The novel is divided into sections that center around different characters, enabling the reader to observe the story's events from numerous perspectives. Galen, the central character, is an endearing figure with a sincere nature and a respectful disposition, but his traumatic experiences during the wars in his home country have left him vulnerable to trusting the wrong people. Despite this, the narrative is filled with suspense and tension, with an ominous conspiracy at its core. The book boasts a diverse cast of characters, ranging from noble personalities to more opportunistic ones. One of Galen's friends, Rowan, stood out for me with his quick-witted humor. The Riva Rohavi, with their savage practices, added a chilling dimension to the story that kept me on edge throughout.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a must-read for fantasy aficionados. With its intricate plot, well-crafted characters, and vividly imagined world, it is a book that will appeal to all fantasy enthusiasts. The book was impeccably edited, as I detected no errors while reading it. As I have no criticisms of the book, I am giving it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
