Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service is a novel written by Craig W. Stanfill that follows the life of a young person named Kim. Kim works as an AI trainer in a utopian environment where AIs control almost all aspects of daily life. This new community lives under the philosophy of unity, community, and equality therefore anything outside of that is ruled as a civil offense. She finds herself becoming more and more aware of how living this life only looks great from the outside but is rather mundane. Throughout the story, she is exposed to the realities of her situation and must decide what her plan of action moving forward will be.
This novel has been one of the most amazing reads that I have picked up. It is a very dramatic spin on other futuristic storylines while also showcasing the author's expertise in the world of technology. This original concept had my mind blown from beginning to end, especially with the great attention to detail. These new lifestyle mannerisms and beliefs were revealed to the reader through conversations and actions instead of explaining everything right off the bat which I believed helped to make the reader develop their judgment through the character's point of view and understand their side first. In previous reviews, individuals complained about the slow burn of the beginning, however, I believe this made the book an even better read because you understood the character and could feel all her emotions with her. The story showed a different perspective on the conversation of supporting diversity and how without everyone being unique, the world becomes very boring and there becomes nothing worth fighting for. Lastly, the professional editing of this book was amazing and also lent to the flawless reading experience.
There were not many negatives to this novel however there was one thing that I found difficult while reading which I believe could just be a personal preference. The author could have given us a form of preface or additional chapter explaining the backstory of how society got to this point and how most persons allowed the AIs to sort of take control. I think even the various cults could also have been given a brief definition so that the reader would have a clearer understanding of what was meant when these words were used. This is just a recommendation for the areas that were not explained during conversation or action in the story itself. Although, the novel can still be read wonderfully without this addition.
My rating for this book is 5 out of 5. As you can tell from the chapters above, I thoroughly enjoyed myself while reading and I would not change a thing about the plot or characters. All aspects of the storyline were developed appropriately and I believe readers were able to get the message. A rating of 4 would not be appropriate because of the sheer genius that is embedded in this novel from the writing style to the formatting of the book.
The message within the story itself is very important for persons of all ages. However, there is mention of drug use and sexual acts that would not be appropriate for children under 16 years of age. It would also not be appropriate for very religious persons. It isn't an explicit novel however explicit content is implied. All in all, I believe this would make an amazing movie and I cannot wait to continue the story of Kim in the sequel.
