Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a captivating work of fiction that delves into a world where humans live under the constant watch of artificial intelligence. Set in a dystopian society, the novel follows Kim, an ambitious young researcher at an AI company. Everything about her life, from clothing choices to food selection, is managed by a computer. Kim's primary job is to train Automatons, robotic devices designed to adapt and operate in real-life scenarios.

The character development in Terms of Service is, in a word, impressive. This is particularly true with regard to Kim's growth and the bond she forms with the Automaton, Kimberly. Stanfill's exceptional storytelling skills kept me thoroughly engaged from beginning to end. His vivid descriptions and masterful ability to maintain suspense were a delight. He also seems to have a deep understanding of the AI systems at play, offering readers a rare glimpse into a not-so-fantastical world where technology dictates every aspect of life. I loved the contrast between two societies, one completely subjugated by AI and the other stoically maintaining independence from it. Finally, Stanfill’s fluent writing makes reading it totally effortless. Sometimes I get bogged down when sci-fi gets too technical, but Stanfill has a knack for presenting complex concepts in a way that is easy to follow. The book has a lot of tech, but it didn’t slow me down at all.

I have almost nothing bad to say about the book. My only minor criticism is with the odd pronouns that people in the story use, which sometimes caused me to struggle with identifying who was speaking. There’s a reason for this pronoun oddness, and it makes sense in context with the book, so it didn’t detract from the story at all. I am only noting it here as a heads-up to any other potential readers to be prepared. Every other aspect of this book was completely positive.

I wholeheartedly award Terms of Service 5 out of 5 stars. It is a compelling and thought-provoking piece of fiction with an intriguing storyline and delightful character development that make it a must-read. I would also like to note the exceptionally well-edited nature of the book.

Tech enthusiasts, sci-fi aficionados, and anyone curious about the potential impact of AI on our lives are sure to love this book. I would also suggest this as a good read for someone looking to dip their toe into science fiction. Guys, I’m serious. Read it. You will not regret it.
