[Following is a volunteer review of "Always Strive to Be a Better You" by Pete Hall.]
How do we live a happy, virtuous, good life? I completely believe we're in charge of our success. The question is, where are we spending our energy? If we truly focus on what we want — instead of getting sidetracked by the negative thoughts of what we want to avoid — we can do amazing things. Don't you think?
Always Strive to Be a Better You by Pete Hall is a self-help book written to guide us on the path of knowing who we truly are, what we want out of life, and how to be our best selves. This book is divided into four tenets (principles), each having its chapters. Tenet one is "know thyself". This guides readers in knowing who they are. Tenet two talks about working for love. Pete urges us to do what we love and love what we do. Tenet three is about letting your light shine. Be the shining star in the room. Be the one to set the pace, and be positive. Lastly, tenet four tells us all to "Rule the day." Instead of waiting for opportunities, seize every minute of the day and be productive!
This book isn't meant to highlight the exceptional individuals whose stories are somewhat familiar, yet, for most of us, remain unrelatable. Instead, you'll read about the extraordinary characteristics of your neighbors, your friends, and your colleagues. Pete used seven individuals as case studies to make each chapter and point clear to readers. These individuals are ordinary people, just like me and you. This brings me to what I like about the book, which is genuineness. They each tell their tales, their struggles, and what they did to be successful. My favorite quote is, "Things don't happen to you, they happen around you."
There's nothing to dislike in this book. Pete warned us about over-crediting and discrediting ourselves. Instead of saying, "I always get the highest sales numbers", say, "When I work hard and dedicate myself, the results show it". Instead of saying "I am terrible at parallel parking", say, "I haven't mastered parallel parking yet". Our attitude determines our altitude, which is to say that our mindset and mental approach can elevate us to greater accomplishments, success, and whatever dreams or goals we all pursue. Pete also included tables, pointers, and relatable illustrations. Cool.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It's a helpful book and so it deserves my rating. It's also exceptionally well edited, and I recommend it to lovers of nonfiction books, those hoping to improve themselves, and anyone looking for motivation. This book helps in self-discovery as well.
