Reconfigurement by E. Alan Fleischauer is a concise self-help book about financially planning for your retirement preferably well in advance. The author has been a financial advisor for many years and has a wealth of knowledge about retirement planning as well as a great sense of humour. Some of his jokes and little stories had me in stitches.

There are thirteen chapters touching on a wide variety of subjects including the importance of diversifying income streams, allocating savings wisely and making mindful spending choices while at the same time enjoying what you do now. The author gives you many ideas about how and where to find budgeting tools and templates as well as ideas about career assessments and the possibility of retraining for a different career, especially as he points out more than 70 % of people actually hate the job they are in. He obviously has a love for life that is quite infectious and uplifting and in no way did this rather dry subject feel like a chore to read. I enjoyed the book greatly and it has encouraged me to start a side hustle from one of my favourite hobbies.

The author included several chapters about retirement saving plans and healthcare that are really only specific to people living in the States but the basic principles are still very important and apply to anyone living in any country. We are all starting to live longer and will therefore need to plan for a longer retirement timeline. Some of the statistics the author quotes are quite staggering, like 67% have no retirement plan at all. Including me before I read this book!

The pace of the book is quick and the content so captivating you just keep on reading. There is something here for everyone to take away , whatever their circumstances and where exactly they are in life's journey. The emphasis is on getting you to think about how you will cope financially during your hopefully long and enjoyable retirement. There is no miraculous money tree growing in your backyard!

In conclusion there is nothing that I dislike about this book. There were a couple of chapters that I just skimmed through as they were aimed at US citizens, however this did not in any way spoil the experience of reading the whole book. I did not find a single error as the editing was exceptional. I am very happy to rate Reconfigurement five out of five stars. I would recommend this book to any adult whatever their age, even people in their 60's as it is never ever too late to start planning for a happier retirement!
