Frustrating Fascination is a work of fiction by Debra Mckenzie. The story revolves around Sean, a homophobic man. It is said that you'll never understand what someone is going through unless you are in their shoes. That is exactly what happened to Sean. What better way to understand homosexuals than being one?

Sean despised homosexuals. The resentment started early in his childhood. It did not help that his best friend Bruce was gay, and Sean was also included in the daily taunting just because they were friends. Not wanting to be involved with Bruce, Sean stopped defending Bruce and slowly severed ties with him. So when his dear wife left him for a woman, he was shattered. Even after the divorce, Sean was unable to move on from her. He felt betrayed, and his resentment for the LGBTQ community grew day by day. Sean was unable to accept what had happened and continued living his life in misery. On one such day, he went to an antique shop to buy a birthday gift for his mother and stumbled upon a mirror. Something about the mirror compelled him to purchase it, and he did. Little did Sean know it would tear apart everything he deemed normal.

The plot heavily depended on Sean's character development. He experienced some drastic situations to understand the struggles faced by the LGBTQ community. The plot advocated equality and self-acceptance. My favourite aspect of the book is the way it ended. I did not see it coming at all. Though I wished to know what Sean's reaction would've been, the ambiguous ending was a perfect way to end the plot.

Even though the plot was well written and carried meaningful messages for the readers, there is a certain aspect that I dislike about the plot. In the new universe, Sean found every single man he stumbled across as attractive. Moreover, he did not find any woman to be attractive, not even his ex-wife. I understand he was supposed to experience life as a gay man, but this felt too forced and unnatural. His emotions were fueled by lust in several instances. I wish the focus could've been more on his rational thoughts. Besides this, there is nothing I dislike about the book.

I would like to rate Frustrating Fascination by Debra Mckenzie 5 out of 5 stars. The book seems to be professionally edited as I couldn't find any errors. I would not recommend this book to younger audiences as there are mature scenes present in the plot. I would like everyone to read this book, regardless of whether they are part of the LGBTQ community or not. The plot offers us an insight into the difficulties faced by the LGBTQ community. I hope this book can help everyone to stay true to themselves no matter what society thinks.
