Hiram is a renowned surgeon and a proud father of three children named Ann, Sophie, and Billie. He has accomplished many feats, including climbing Mount Everest and several other mountains. Moreover, he has also established a hospital in Nepal to support the underprivileged. However, despite all these accomplishments, Hiram has faced significant challenges in his marriages. He has gone through multiple divorces and eventually decided to focus entirely on his career and success.

Hiram makes a deal with Michael, a board member of the International College of Surgeons, but he fails to honor his promise after being elected as the President of the Board of Regents at the institution. As Hiram's career progresses, he faces a setback when he becomes the president's nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Allegations of murder and fraud resurface, putting his career in jeopardy. As a result, Hiram finds himself in a difficult situation and wonders if he can overcome these obstacles.

The writer also succeeded in providing readers with a break by utilizing other characters to share Hiram's story. This allowed us to witness his intense love for his children, which was fascinating. It served as a reminder that people are not simply good or bad but rather exist in shades of gray. For Hiram's children, he was a loving father, but to everyone else, he appeared as a heartless individual with no allegiance except to himself. McDowell by William H. Coles delves into the importance of responsible parenting and emphasizes the instability that infidelity can bring to a family. It is intriguing to note that the book stresses the importance of honesty and authenticity while highlighting the consequences of deceitful behavior. Additionally, this book emphasizes that parents have the ability to build meaningful connections with their children.

The book successfully captures a compelling and immersive reality that made me feel like a participant in a movie. While reading, I experienced a range of emotions, from intense hatred towards Hiram to a deep admiration for Sophie's character. One of the book's notable strengths is its portrayal of women and their significant roles that surpass societal expectations. I found the author's depiction of moral decay and societal taboos particularly insightful. Throughout the novel, the author expertly describes the innermost feelings and experiences of the characters, making it difficult to put the book down. William H. Coles demonstrates a keen understanding of the human condition, and his storytelling skills are commendable.

However, at the start of the book, I found it a little tricky to keep up with the narrative flow, as each chapter would delve into the story of a different and/or new character, making it a bit disorienting. However, this won't affect the rating.

I would give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The book was exceptionally edited. For those who enjoy thought-provoking thrillers, I highly recommend this book.
