We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a beautifully written book which spares no expense in its vivid and immersive imagery. The book follows the story of Galen, a character wonderfully juxtaposed in the sense that they are depicted as a refugee of sorts, yet have the background of familial riches. After Galen’s arrival the tone of the story shifts to follow a character fending for themselves as a victim of circumstance after their uncle’s death. This book deserves high praise at all points; the settings feel descriptive and yet also in a sense relatable for the reader.

The book surprised me in its handling of very complex and mature topics discussed throughout. The background of the book sees a civil war and this point is explored excellently. The descriptions and imagery are so extremely well done that at points the visual image the reader constructs of the world is akin to the settings and depictions of cinematography. The flow and pacing of the book is also refreshing, moving at a good pace yet also taking the time to appropriately develop each plot point to its most vivid form. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies also wonderfully depicts scenes of classical fantasy action; however, for this reason the book does contain its fair share of violent imagery and scenes not appropriate for children. On the contrary, the scenes are of course written excellently with no excessive and unnecessary over exaggeration of violence. Mature teens along with adults will surely enjoy this blend between imagery and action.

There is no doubt that We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is deserving of 5 out of 5 stars. The author mentions that they consider the book to be an episodic style entry into a wider series. For this reason I must say I am excited to see what further entries will be introduced into this series. Furthermore, to complement the exceptional writing comes exceptional editing. I found no mistakes during my reading of the book that would hinder my enjoyment of it.

I should also mention that the book does not shy away from scenes exploring paedophilia and other mature topics. There is also use of profanity although it is not overused. I consider the author’s exploration of such mature and complex topics to add to the masterpiece they have created. Each topic creates more depth and life in the world they have created and so I can only praise them for their exceptional work. I consider We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies to be perfection of the fantasy genre.
