[Following is a volunteer review of "Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures" by Catherine A. Pepe.]
Catherine A. Pepe's charming children's book Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures follows two siblings, Mary Grace and Donny, as they face difficulties and go on thrilling adventures while living with their grandparents in California. Donny, Mary Grace's younger brother who has Down syndrome, and their parents all reside in Kansas. She adores her entire family and has a large network of friends, but when she finds out that her parents must spend the next two years in Africa and that she and her brother must move in with their grandparents in California, everything she knew about her family and her circle of friends is turned upside down. While Mary Grace initially struggles with the transition and feels abandoned, she gradually learns valuable lessons about responsibility, acceptance, kindness, and forgiveness as she makes new friends and attempts to solve a mystery. Donny goes missing at the zoo but is later found, which establishes the scene for how the tale will develop.
The book's quick pacing and seamless integration of events make it an engaging and thrilling read, and the siblings' family and grandparents' love and support for them is endearing. With his optimistic perspective and tenacity, Donny's demeanor is motivating, and his catchphrase "every day will be a good day" encourages having a positive outlook.
The overall impression of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure is favorable and will be given a rating of 5 out of 5, indicating that the book would be a suitable choice for kids and young adults searching for an exciting and touching tale.
