Hold Your breath by Rana Bitar is a compilation of journal entries or poems penned by the author amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Within its pages, the author contemplates diverse facets of life during this period, encompassing the impact on her medical profession, relationships with loved ones, and the broader effects on society. The book explores a wide range of themes, delving into family dynamics, the societal repercussions of a pandemic, the experience of grief and loss, the challenges faced by healthcare professionals, as well as the interplay between fear and hope.

The initial entry in the book presents a deeply personal introspection. The author contemplates the notion of an impending apocalypse and the potential regrets she may have regarding unfulfilled experiences before such an event occurs. Subsequently, the author delves into her experiences as a healthcare provider amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Within this reflection, the author ponders the uncertainty surrounding life and death, encompassing both the diagnoses of her cancer patients and the overarching pandemic. Additionally, she contemplates the challenges of communication while wearing masks and realizes the value of life through this lens. The book proceeds to chronicle the author's encounter with loss and grief, exploring its enduring impact on her personal and professional existence. Throughout the narrative, prevalent themes of isolation, fear, and loss emerge. The author consistently reflects upon the physical and emotional toll exacted by the pandemic upon both herself and her patients. She vividly describes the prevailing anxiety and fear that saturate the atmosphere, the weight of silence pressing down like gravity, and the perpetual concern for the safety and well-being of herself and those in her vicinity.

One of the aspects that deeply resonated with me in this book was the author's adeptness in employing language and imagery to convey intricate emotions and experiences. The writing possessed a remarkable potency, evoking vivid imagery, and exhibiting a poetic and unfiltered quality that allowed the reader to glimpse the author's vulnerability and unvarnished honesty. Furthermore, the book presented a distinctive perspective on a significant historical moment that left an indelible impact on individuals worldwide. Additionally, the book's relevance to contemporary social issues contributed to its value as a noteworthy contribution to modern literature. It skillfully tackled a diverse range of themes, encompassing grief, family, illness, and the enigmatic aspects of the human condition. The exploration of these themes struck a delicate balance between offering intensely personal insights and resonating with a universal audience.

I disliked nothing about this book as my appreciation for the book stems from its unfiltered and sincere depiction of the human condition amidst a crisis. The author's writing style possesses an immersive quality, captivating readers and enabling them to fully immerse themselves in the scenes while empathizing with the characters' emotions and challenges. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to those intrigued by the experiences of healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as individuals who appreciate introspective and contemplative writing

I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Its ability to poignantly and powerfully depict the human experience amidst adversity was remarkable. The author skillfully navigated through a range of intense emotions and encounters, all while unearthing moments of hope and profound connections with others. As a result, the book stands as a captivating testament to the indomitable resilience of the human spirit in the face of hardship. The writing masterfully captured the profound weight and pervasive uncertainty that many individuals experienced during that period, creating a profoundly immersive atmosphere. Furthermore, the exceptional editing ensured a flawless reading experience, free from errors.
