[Following is a volunteer review of "Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures" by Catherine A. Pepe.]
Donny and Mary were such delightful siblings. Donny, a child with special needs, was dearly loved by his sister, Mary Grace, who would do anything for him. However, their parents had to travel to Africa, leaving both Donny and Mary Grace feeling sad. Even though they would be staying with their grandparents, Grandma Cathy and Pa Steve, in California, they didn't want to be alone. Mr. Miller, their father, had served as a priest and rector of St. James Episcopal Church for over ten years, but he was sent to Kenya for missionary work. How would Donny and Mary adapt? What I adored most about this book was the strong bond within the Miller family. Their love for one another, including Donny, was incredibly heartwarming. The way they cared for Donny, with such tenderness, truly touched my heart. When Donny went missing in the zoo, the entire family became frantic in their search for him. It clearly demonstrated their closeness. Additionally, they enjoyed spending time together at the zoo and sharing ice cream.
Donny was an absolutely endearing character, and I found him to be extremely likable. His way of speaking, carrying himself, and showing love to others made him charismatic, and his positive energy was contagious. The same can be said for Mary Grace, despite her strong-willed nature.
The character development in the book was flawless, just like the well-crafted plot. I couldn't find anything to dislike about the book. Furthermore, it was impeccably edited, as I encountered no errors or typos. I wholeheartedly give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars and see no reason to rate it any lower. This book would be perfect for children aged 12 and above who enjoy informative and entertaining novels. Even adults can delve into this book, and it's truly worth their time.
