Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures, a book from the Grandma Gang Mystery series penned by Catherine A. Pepe, explores various themes such as sibling affection, family bonds, friendship, and embracing disabilities. Donny Miller, an exuberant five-year-old with Down Syndrome, shares a strong bond with his adoring older sister, Mary Grace. Their parents, Mr and Mrs Miller, go to great lengths to safeguard Donny from the challenges of the outside world, especially when he goes missing during a visit to the zoo.

Their lives take a new direction when Mr Miller, who works as a priest, is asked by the church to participate in a charitable mission to a small village in Kenya. Consequently, they decide to send Donny and Mary Grace to live with their grandparents in California. Upon discovering that their parents will be absent for two years, Mary Grace becomes indignant and worried about leaving her elementary school in Wichita unfinished. Additionally, she frets over how her brother Donny will be treated in California. However, Donny swiftly adapts to his new classroom with his ever-present happiness. On the other hand, Mary Grace faces harassment from an unidentified bully due to her brother's disability. Fortunately, her grandma Cathy, along with her friends LaShana and Elizabeth, form the eccentric Grandma Gang—a group of women who play bridge and solve mysteries—and they provide support to Mary Grace in uncovering the culprit.

This book offered a heartfelt and enchanting reading experience. It skillfully portrays children with disabilities and sheds light on the challenges faced by those around them daily. What I truly appreciate is how the book maintains Donny's vibrant and energetic personality without burdening him with overwhelming emotions at such a tender age. Remarkably, the author gently addresses emotional bullying, fostering awareness and sensitivity, especially considering that it is a children's book. Furthermore, I was captivated by the depiction of the beautiful friendship and unwavering affection shared between Mary Grace and her brother, Donny.

I found nothing to dislike about this book. It is a heartwarming and sincere novel that imparts a valuable lesson to children: to embrace their true selves without fear. I highly recommend this book to young children, individuals with disabilities, educators, and especially parents who are raising a child with disabilities.

I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It captivated me from start to finish and left a profound impact. The author's remarkable talent shines through in their ability to craft a story that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking, offering valuable lessons on self-acceptance and embracing diversity. The author's dedication to ensuring the book was exceptionally well-edited and free from errors further showcases their commitment to delivering a polished and enjoyable reading experience. I wholeheartedly commend the author for their exceptional creativity, talent, and the positive influence their book can have on their readers.
