Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine Anne Pepe is a captivating children's story that follows the exciting journey of two siblings, Donny and Mary Grace, from Wichita to California. The story commences with a trip to the zoo with the Miller family on a scorching summer day. Everything seems to be going well until Donny goes missing, leading to a frantic search throughout the entire zoo. Fortunately, Mary Grace locates her sibling with the assistance of a photograph.

As the narrative progresses, Mr. and Mrs. Miller are unexpectedly assigned to be missionaries in Kenya. Faced with a difficult decision, they must leave their children in the care of their grandparents in California. This news devastates their children, particularly Mary Grace, who begins to question their parents' love for her and her brother. However, with time and consolation, Mary Grace comes to terms with their parents' decision. Donny is asked by their mother to draw things they can look forward to in California, while Mary Grace lists the things she will miss in Wichita.

Upon arriving in California, Mary Grace discovers the "Grandma Gang" and eagerly seeks to join. She succeeds, but at what cost? To uncover the full story and see how events unfold, one must delve into the book's pages.

I commend Catherine Anne Pepe for her courage in portraying a child with Down syndrome, Donny, as a kind and enthusiastic character. Rather than defining Donny solely by his disability, the author presents a commendable representation that is inspiring to readers. It is truly heartening to encounter such inclusive representation in children's literature.

One aspect of the book that stands out is the well-developed characterization of the siblings. Despite being a children's story, the author delves deep into their personalities. The strong bond between Donny and Mary Grace is commendable, as it contributes to the overall lightheartedness of the tale. Another commendable aspect is the exploration of the theme of bullying, which is a pertinent issue in today's society. I appreciate how the author addresses this serious matter in a manner that children can easily understand, allowing the characters to navigate and cope with it.

The inclusion of illustrations preceding each chapter is another aspect I enjoyed. These visual snippets provide readers with a glimpse into the upcoming events and enhance their ability to visualize the story in a fun and creative way. It stimulates the reader's imagination, making the storytelling experience more engaging.

Honesty prompts me to say that I found nothing to dislike about this book. The fact that it effectively conveys a valuable lesson about bullying is commendable on its own. I believe that children who read this book will gain valuable insights into dealing with bullying, making them better individuals, much like the characters of Mary Grace and Donny.

Overall, I rate Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. The book is flawlessly edited, allowing for easy readability, making it suitable for children. However, I also recommend it to adults, as it is a heartwarming story that teaches us about the importance of family, perseverance, and kindness.
