[Following is a volunteer review of "The graveyard and other poems" by Mae Bea Sayes.]
Are you looking for some thought-provoking poetry? The Graveyard and Other Poems by Mae Bea Sayes would be perfect for you. In the book, each poem takes you on a journey through the depths of human experience and will leave you asking yourself questions long after you have finished reading it. The author uses evocative language to arouse our emotions and thoughts.
Some of the issues addressed in this book include death and mortality, sorrow and pain, and love and relationships. The author employs several literary devices, including imagery, repetition, personification, alliteration, and irony, to enhance the poem's impact on the readers. In this book, you will see the power of language to evoke deep feelings and paint vivid pictures. The poem ‘Angel in the House" is the one that stood out for me. In this poem, the poet challenges some of the societal norms and expectations of women.
What I liked most about this book was the rich use of poetic devices to enhance the poem's messages. For example, in the poem "Corpse Girl," the repetition of "deep" and "dark" has been used to emphasize the depth of her coma. I appreciated the author’s efforts in putting up some pictures, which helped break the monotony.
I did not like the use of a French word in the poem "The Ocean." Initially, I found it confusing until I researched its meaning. Also, I did not like that in some of the poems, I had to draw knowledge from some classic literary texts to understand the poem better. Some readers are unfamiliar with the texts.
I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It was professionally edited, and hence I did not find any grammar or spelling mistakes. Furthermore, the poems are very engaging from the first to the last. I would recommend this book to older teenagers and adults who are poetry enthusiasts.
