Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
Mary Grace was dealt a huge blow when her parents announced they had to go to Africa for two years on a mission. They wanted Mary Grace and her brother Donny, who had Down syndrome, to go live with their grandparents in California. This meant they had to leave all their friends in Wichita and even go to new schools. Mary Grace has no choice and even starts to love the new school until a series of events almost make her change her mind.
Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe is a book that mainly focuses on Donny, who has Down syndrome. His experiences with his sister are carefully narrated in this book. Mary Grace is depicted as a caring sister who protects Donny. The book mainly teaches about bullying but also has other teachings like friendship, parenting, and discipline. I love how Mr. and Mrs. Miller's parenting skills influenced their children's lives. The way they manage conflicts is a parenting technique every parent should learn.
There is one aspect of the book I dislike. I came across a page that confused me. Mary Grace had left Donny in her room to discuss something with her parents, but I realized that Donny also contributed to the conversation. I thought that Donny had sneaked in, but that was not what happened. I'm convinced that this was a mistake in the book. Furthermore, I would love to find out what happened in that situation.
Because of the confusion caused by that event, I will deduct a star. I rate Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures 4 out of 5 stars. How the Grandma Gang collaborated and helped Mary Grace helped me learn a lot. I also love the few illustrations that are included in the book. I did not come across any grammatical errors or typos in the book. This shows that it was perfectly edited.
I recommend Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe to children, parents, and teachers who have a problem with bullying. The book has some techniques on how to handle this issue. Parents who need advice on how to guide their children will also love it. Anyone who loves solving mysteries should also pick up this book.
