Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe centers around a close-knit family, the Millers. Mr. and Mrs. Miller have to go to Africa on a mission for two years. This would force them to leave their two children, Donny and Mary, behind. They decide to send the children to stay with their grandparents in California.

Mary Miller is not so excited about going, as she believes California would not be as interesting as her life in Wichita. Donny is, however, excited to move to a new place and engage in new adventures. How would the children cope in California? Would it be exactly as they hoped for it to be? Grab a copy and find out!

There are so many positive aspects to this book. I was really surprised when I found out that this book is non-fiction. While reading the book, I tried picturing a family like that actually existing, and it made me sympathize with the family's tough decision to leave their children behind and travel to another continent. The language the author used was elementary and easy to understand. I believe this is one of the book's appeals as a children's book. It is also filled with valuable lessons that are indispensable in nurturing and training a child. Gratitude, politeness, family, and positivity are some of such lessons. The author highlighted the need to always express gratitude.

The book also broached an important societal ill that plagues young children, which is bullying. Donny was bullied because of his Down syndrome. Regardless, he kept a positive attitude and never let it weigh him down. His family was a great support system for him. His sister, Mary Grace, always looked out for him. This was depicted right at the beginning of the book, when she organized a search party to look for her brother.

I could not find any negative aspects of this book. It was entertaining to read and exceptionally well edited. I was unable to find any errors. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because of the above reasons. I recommend this book to families with children struggling with any disabilities or who want their children to grow up with great values.
