[Following is a volunteer review of "Terms of Service" by Craig W. Stanfill.]
In Terms of Service, Craig W. Stanfill penned a fascinating story about the future. Although fictional, this book brings to life our deepest desire for freedom and self-discovery. The story is set in the future, or what the author imagines the future to look like after a number of great wars. Craig W. Stanfill paints a vivid picture of what the future looks like through the eyes of Kim, the protagonist. She works for an artificial intelligence company that controls society through a set of rules everyone is expected to live by or face punishment. In this book, we find out how a boring life of routine while working for an artificial intelligence company can quickly become one filled with danger and excitement after Kim’s old friend, Shane, re-enters her life, stirring up all kinds of trouble for her. Kim makes a series of showing discoveries that lead her to question her existence and the society she lives in. She is left with two options, either she lives a rebellious life like her friend Shane, or she continues to comply with the terms of the artificial intelligence company. This decision is made even more interesting by the introduction of artificial intelligence called Kimberly. Learn more about Kim's decisions and how she adapts to a life of danger and excitement in this interesting piece by Craig W. Stanfill.
I loved the futuristic plot of the story and the fact that the author gave a detailed description of what life on Earth would look like in the future. Regardless of Kim’s difficult choices, the book taught a great deal about diligence to work and obedience to authority. Even though Kim felt saddened by her work, she still put in her best and excelled where her mates failed. I also loved that Kim and Shane's friendship prevailed after the efforts by the artificial intelligence company and society to break them apart. Their friendship eventually became a light at the end of the tunnel for them. It was fascinating to see Kim embark on a journey of self-discovery, uncovering all the missing bits of her past and becoming her own person, even when faced with heavy criticism from society and the company she worked for.
I don't think a lot of readers will appreciate the technicality of this book. A reader who is not knowledgeable in the science of artificial intelligence will have a hard time enjoying this book because most of the concepts in it will be alien to him. Apart from that, I didn't find any other issues in this book.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I didn't see any spelling or grammatical errors in it, so it's accurate to say that it was exceptionally well edited. This is an interesting book with a lot of interesting characters and valuable life lessons. I didn't take away a star from it because it would be impossible to discuss artificial intelligence without being technical, so I wouldn't really fault the author for the technicality of the book.
Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a perfect fit for science fiction lovers. It is also a great read for people struggling to discover themselves. I believe they can pick some lessons that will help them on the journey of self-discovery from Kim’s life.
