[Following is a volunteer review of "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" by P D Botha.]
Yesterday, Today and tomorrow is non-fiction by P D Botha; this book talks a great deal about the universe which may sound scientific and philosophical, but there is also some religious content in it which is also the important part of this book – The book consist out of 10 chapters, the first chapters covers the yesterday part of the title. Which begins from the studies of evolution, the sun and cosmogenesis. The evolution chapter talking about how living organisms evolved after the big bang and how the sun plays an important role to life on earth. The cosmogenesis chapter talks about how the whole universe is made out of small subatomic matter called barions and how these barions form atoms and atoms to matter.
Noogenesis is a lengthy chapter which talks about how intelligence was a stepping stone to the human species, because of it the human species evolved high up the food chain and built great civilizations and got us here. Then lastly the book talks about how God was merciful even when humans turned their backs on Him using the stories of Adam, Eve, Noah and Abraham from the book of Genesis is a reference. The book is concluded on religious note that there has to be a God for this divine intervention.
I found this book quite intriguing with all the information it offers; there was plenty of stuff I was not aware of that came to light after reading this book – for instance how the earth formed island crust called cratons when the earth was cooling down after the big bang, and how some of these ancient rocks are found in South Africa. I also liked how the book concluded with a religious aspect, especially Hawking’s conclusion that “There must be a God” behind how the universe began.
There isn’t much I don’t like about the book, I'd say it contains a lot of information that can be too much to grasp all at once. How the first chapter were arranged made the book feel like it had no direction, for instance I felt Cosmogenesis should have been the first chapter followed by The Sun chapter and then evolution. Either than that, the book was well written and professionally edited.
I rate this book a 5 out of 5 star despite everything I dislike about it in the beginning. I believe this book to be educational and eye opening. Reading it gave me a better understanding how everything came to being, from our universe to our solar system.
I’d recommend this book to lovers of science, theology, philosophy and religion. I’d say it also appeals to all age groups since the books purposes is informing and educating people.
