Review of McDowell

[Following is a volunteer review of "McDowell" by William H. Coles.]
The plot of this book revolves around the life of Hiram McDowell, a prominent surgeon and philanthropist. He rose to power in the International College of Surgeons by adopting morally questionable tactics. Despite his accomplishments, Hiram has a complicated past, and his selfish actions have caused damage to his family, friends, and colleagues. Hiram is portrayed as a man motivated by his basic instincts, taking whatever he wants without bothering about the fallout. The plethora of mistakes he makes serves to illustrate his lack of judgment and eventually leads to his downfall. Read McDowell to find out Hiram's mistakes and how he made up for them.
It is a rare occurrence to come across a tale that takes a seemingly unsympathetic character and makes them a lovable protagonist. But that is precisely what William H. Coles has accomplished with his remarkable novel McDowell. The character's transformation is a refreshing take on the traditional narrative of a villainous character. The author's expertise in crafting a compelling narrative shines through in this book, making it a must-read for fiction lovers of all kinds.
The book left an indelible impression on me long after I had finished reading it. However, it also served as a clarion call to address some issues that demand our immediate attention. One such issue is the deleterious effects of violent video games on children and even gun control. The book also provided a basis for reflection on the more important things in life. Are all the achievements, wealth, and fame more valuable than the people? This book was my wake-up call to set priorities and know what matters most to me.
The most enjoyable aspect of the book, in my opinion, was the gradual and realistic transformation of the characters. It was compelling to watch how the character arcs evolved and how the characters' lives were affected by their relationships with other individuals. The character development wasn't restricted to Hiram alone; rather, other characters underwent significant transformations as they brushed shoulders with Hiram.
Overall, I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars for its narrative complexity and the strength of its characters. McDowell is truly a gem in contemporary literature—a deeply impactful tale that will keep readers hooked until the very last page. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys gripping tales with strong characters and philosophical undertones. The book was professionally edited, and I disliked nothing about it.
