[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy novel that details the fictional kingdom of Voulhire. The book achieves this by telling the story from the perspectives of different people in and around the kingdom, who reside in different places and have different statuses. Among these is Galen Bray, an escapee of the great war of the prisons who by the machinations of his now late uncle, has made it into Voulhire and quickly discovers he has a gift of blacksmithing like his late uncle. At the other end of the social strata is King Wilhelm, the king of Voulhire who has to contend with many problems, a big one being the great wizard Meldorath, a huge threat whom the people thinks is dead but is merely imprisoned, his threat looming large in containment. There is also the Chief councilor Midius Maido, the king's nemesis who serves as the kingdom's chancellor and foil to the king and of course, there is Eldus Alderman, the astute former judge sent by King Wilhelm to improve Hillport, a remote town which unbeknownst to the people serves as a prison to Meldorath. They all combine to give us a great story encompassing mystery, suspense, politics, magic, and the supernatural.
There are so many awesome things about this book, the first being the multiple points of view it adopts. By allowing the reader to see the kingdom from the eyes of multiple characters who reside in different places, we get an expansive view of the kingdom as well as a beautiful story with a wide yet connected plot. The characters are well developed, with the book doing a great job of making us understand not just their character traits, but also their motivations and circumstances which have contributed to who they are. Another beautiful thing about the book is that everyone may have valid reasons for their actions, even those seen as evil. A perfect example of this is Meldorath, a mage who has performed seemingly horrific acts and may have been attempting to protect the material world from the forces of the world of magic and thinks he was wrongfully imprisoned. The Riva Rohavi, age-long terrorists of Voulhire, owe their antagonism to the ancient massacre committed against their people so long ago. Moreso, the book is extremely immersive, you almost feel like you're living the reality of the characters. The book is filled with suspense and excitement, the readers will find that at many points they do not know what will happen next, and are anticipating the unraveling of every twist and turn. A special mention has to go to how the book presented politics. A mystical book, it presented politics in a very realistic manner, one that mirrors real life. The book marries political intrigue with action and magic in equal measure, you just have to love it. Finally, the editing is top-notch, with no spelling or grammatical errors of any kind. This warrants congratulations to the writer and editor, for making sure that such a well-written book was not held back by poor editing.
Having done a complete and concise evaluation of this work, I have found no flaws in it. It is a lovely piece of art with no spelling errors, it has a beautiful plot, expertly crafted and woven with multiple points of view, and some exquisite character development. It is elegantly edited and managed to meld all of its mystical areas with the realistic in a brilliant manner.
I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. One cannot praise the book enough, kudos to the writer for coming up with such a brilliant masterpiece. It's a lovely novel with brilliant writing which might only be bettered by its awesome character development.
I recommend this book to all lovers of mystical and supernatural works. Lovers of thrillers and suspense-filled books will also find this book very much worth their while. In general, anyone that likes good books will surely be taken with this work.
