The graveyard and other poems by Mae Bea Sayes is a collection of poems bordering on subjects like redemption, time, solitude, and death. It looks at the process of a soul's rebirth after death. The book contains 42 pages and 25 poems. The poems in this nonfiction book are mostly concerned with the contrast between life and death and light and darkness. It also contains themes about love.

The book covers a host of morbid topics like corpses, ghosts, graveyards, and death. The gloomy book cover does well in establishing what the reader can expect in the following pages. The book is thought-provoking as it reveals some mysteries about how a soul leaves this earth.

My favorite poem was the one titled Early Childhood Memories. In this section, the author delves into her life as a child. It showed that she had a happy childhood and felt the love of both her parents. I loved how, during her childhood, each day ended with a bedtime story. This was the only poem that did not give off a sense of doom.

The fact that I had to juggle between my dictionary and the book did not appeal to me. At first, I was glad at the prospect of coming across new words, but it soon turned into an inconvenience for me. Aside from this, I have no other complaints. Notwithstanding, I rate The graveyard and other poems 5 out of 5 stars. The above complaints are not enough to rate it lower. I found only one error in this book, which goes to show that it was professionally edited.

I don't recommend this book to young readers because of the narrative and vivid descriptions of death and corpses. This book is better suited for adults who enjoy poems about graveyards and the afterlife.
