The book Just Die by author E. Alan Fleischauer is the story of the protagonist Jake Silver. Jake suffers a stroke, but with good medical care is able to recover from it. As a youngster, he had been taught by his mother never to give anyone the finger. Instead, she had taught him to just point at them and say ‘Just die’. After the stroke, Silver finds that whenever he points his finger at any living creature and says those words, they actually die immediately. The book follows him as he comes to grips with this tremendous power. His fiancée Beth Ann and his new, but loyal, friend Omar help him on this journey.

The premise of the story is interesting. The book is a page-turner. The story moves fast and the reader is always curious to know what happens next. Omar and Beth Ann are especially likable characters. The camaraderie between Omar and Jake feels refreshing. Jake meets a lot of interesting people stuck in difficult circumstances, and he has to decide whether or not use his powers to help them.

However, Jake is shown to have an extremely rapid recovery. The book begins with him slurring his words and he is fully functional soon after. In fact, as the story progresses, the readers can be forgiven if they forget that the story began with Jake’s stroke. Though there are mentions of Jake being on a diet in view of his stroke, his diet would make any doctor shake their head in disbelief. Another mistake in the plot occurs when a minor character, who is Muslim, is said to have been cremated. Muslims are always buried. Beth Ann agreeing to meet her father also seems to stretch the imagination, given their terrible history.

I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. It is definitely an entertaining book, but several plot points defy logic.

Readers who are looking for a light read with interesting characters will like this book.
