[Following is a volunteer review of "28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir" by Poppy Mortimer.]
28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir by author Poppy Mortimer details the dreadful dates she has been on in her search for The One. Poppy is an entrepreneur who has been highly successful in her career, but the same cannot be said for her love life. From Mr Incredible Hulk and his steroid-driven rage to Mr Third Wheel, who has already found a soulmate in his dog, follow Poppy as she chronicles 20 years of dates spanning England, Australia and the US.
Firstly, I loved this book; Poppy Mortimer should try her hand at stand-up comedy. I am thoroughly impressed with how she was able to recount disturbing experiences with such humour. Poppy has experienced it all, from the absurd to the downright inappropriate. I honestly cannot fathom how she has attracted so much bad luck when it comes to dating, but it makes for a very entertaining read. A story that stuck out to me was Mr Muscle and his constant smelly farts. I could not believe his lack of self-awareness.
I liked Poppy's writing style as it was informal and suited the premise of disastrous dates. I also enjoyed how the book was structured. Each story started with a title, her age at the time, the location and how the date came about. Furthermore, the end of each story had a positive and negative about each date, which helped bring balance and a fresh perspective. It showed maturity and development on Poppy's end and helped her to establish her own boundaries and limits in relationships. I cannot think of any criticisms this book, as I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Poppy bleeped out any severe profanity, but there were instances of borderline profanity. She also references intercourse, but there is no on page intimate scenes. Overall, I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to women and anyone looking for a quick and easy read.
