Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Beginning with the execution of one Lord of Hillport for his crimes against children, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz A few months later, the focus of the narrative shifts to a young man named Gallen Bray, who manages to flee the violent Lands of the Princes in an effort to begin a new life in Magnum Caelum, a large nation called Voulhire, where he has been given automatic citizenship as the sole heir to his dying uncle's forge. We also receive the stories of other Voulhire residents, recounted in the third-person narrative, in addition to Galen's account, which is the only one presented in the first person. These inhabitants include the recently appointed lord of Hillport, Eldus Alderman, the potent magician Meldorath, King Wilhelm of Voulhire, and more.
On the other side, a young man by the name of Galen Bray is presented to us as he flees the Lands of the Princes. He was traveling to Magnum Caelum, a Voulhire metropolis. The accounts of these two incidents are given side by side. They are both significant in some way to Voulhire. Galen's presence, however, goes unnoticed. He initially appears to be a minor new member of Magnum Caelum, but time will tell. I cherished how Galen's tale had the air of a beginning. Although he doesn't appear much during the narrative, his presence in Voulhire serves as the book's partial title, so there is a residual impression that his tale will play a larger role in future novels.
The setting for Voulhire and its characters are established in the first book of the series. A map is provided to help the reader understand all the various geographical regions as well as the history of the country and its neighboring islands. With descriptions of varied landscapes, towns, individuals with various magical abilities, and unexpected, extraordinary occurrences that take place, the author deepens the fantasy theme. The fantasy setting of the novel is engaging, and the momentum is maintained by the superb character development and consistent imagery building. The novel was a true page-turner for me, and I was captivated by every turn of circumstance.
I found the character interactions to be really appealing. Under the surface, there are many unknowns about the relationships between people, including power struggles, lies, dark secrets, and widespread corruption within the Voulhire hierarchy. The unraveling of hidden intentions is really fascinating.
There was not a single aspect of this book that I didn't like. I was engrossed in it from the prologue to the very last page, since it was both entertaining and fascinating. This book was exceptionally well edited, and I didn't see any mistakes while reading it. Since I had such a great time reading it, I gave it a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
Violence and occasional profanity are present in several of the situations in this novel. There are also references to child abuse, so if any of them disturb you, I advise you to read with caution. Anyone who likes reading fantasy, magic, and adventure books should pick this one up. It was a lot of fun.
