[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy book that tells the story of a young man who spends most of his life in a nation ravaged by war, starvation, and death. However, he is able to escape to a new world and a new nation because of his uncle's goodwill. The new nation is very different from the one he's coming from—prosperous, happy, and peaceful, or so it seems. Despite the peaceful state of the nation, there are events and secrets that threaten this peace. Secrets that involve the king and a powerful mage. It is a book about government, politics, magic, mages, kingdoms, and worlds.
The author did a very good job with the character development, as each chapter focused mainly on a single character, exposing and explaining the role of the character. The events in the book unlock the imaginative power of one's mind, as it would be difficult to really enjoy reading it without imagining the events play out in one's head. The dialogues are filled with humor and emotion. The book is also filled with suspense and mystery, as each chapter leaves you with a certain question or doubt. The author also did a good job of developing the kingdom of Voulhire—the people, the geography, their history, their religion, and their various activities. The author really put in a lot of imaginative work when writing the book. I have a feeling that the book can be adapted into a very good movie that will appeal to a larger audience.
However, the author used a lot of complex vocabulary, which sometimes made it difficult to read the book. The plot of the book is also nice, although I felt it was a bit slow and complex at some points, which can confuse the reader. One has to be patient and really attentive to really enjoy the book. Notwithstanding, the editing of the book was exceptional, as I didn't find any errors while reading it. Hence, I'll give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
I'll recommend this book to people who love fantasy books about kingdoms, magic, and mages. Also, people who love reading books filled with suspense and mystery will find this a good read.
