Review of Man Mission
[Following is a volunteer review of "Man Mission" by Eytan Uliel.]
The novel Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is an adventure tale about friendship and fraternity. Back in university, the author, Uliel, and Sam came up with the concept of a "boys' trip", where they would go on an annual excursion for food, outdoor recreation, and a respite from their regular lives. We can see how this concept develops into a yearly Man Mission, where they eventually welcome two more of his buddies, Daniel and Alec. For fifteen years, the four decided to travel together to far-off places like Vietnam,South Africa and Iceland while participating in outdoor pursuits like kayaking, hiking, and cycling. Huge changes occur in these men's lives over the years, and we get to see how their friendship enables them to navigate the ups and downs that life throws at them. My favorite character is the author since, per The Man Mission Charter, he is the one who gets to whine the most and thus earns the Pink Bracelet.
Even if it's fiction, I applaud how the author skillfully highlighted the expectations society has placed on males, demanding them to wear their separate roles without providing a clear guide on fulfilling these obligations. Additionally, we learn how sincere friendships can occasionally save us from difficult circumstances in which we don't need to pass judgment. My primary takeaway is that society should do more to give our males a safe space to be open and expressive without fear of ridicule, because sometimes it's just acceptable not to be okay.
The inclusion of maps, along with quotes and Bible scriptures at the beginning of each chapter, was a wonderful touch. Not to mention the fantastic job of providing a brief synopsis of each journey, taking into account the primary activities of each mission completed.
The book has excellent editing, so I give it a perfect score of 5 out of 5 stars. The author takes great care to describe each location where a Man Mission event would occur in detail.
I strongly recommend this book to an 18+ audience, as it has some profanity. And most young adults would greatly benefit, as they will relate to most of the marital issues the writer has brought out in the book.
