The Smartest Person in the Room by Christian Espinosa is a straight forward, how to book. I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Mr. Espinoza shows his expertise and passion for the subject matter from start to finish in a logical, linear manner. As the book begins, we are presented with the hypothesis. The hypothesis is then backed with multiple examples and explanations of exactly why and how the writer has come to his conclusion. His meticulous attention to details along with his ability to share anecdotes is relatable not just to the cyber professional but also to the layman.

After presenting his initial ideas, he breaks down his reasoning in pieces and he suggests solutions for each point in a systematic way. As I first began reading this book, I was concerned that perhaps I was not a good fit since my background is not cyber security but as I continued reading, I saw that the concepts presented are not strictly geared to the cyber security industry but is applicable to leaders of any team in any field.

Mr. Espinoza’s experience as a coach comes through clearly as he puts each example in a manner that pulls the reader into the situation and shows how the presented solutions can be affective for any situation. The concepts presented show an understanding of human nature and offers methods of breaking down walls to improve people skills. These methods also help in building working relationships that improve the ability of teams to work together.

In addition to giving examples to explain how he has come to his conclusions; he also recommends activities that are useful in showing team members how new behaviors can make a difference in productivity. I would highly recommend this book to any team leader who truly care about maintaining a positive work environment. The personal anecdotes and suggested activities present new ideas and opportunities for improved leadership.
