[Following is a volunteer review of "Stress Test: How Donald Trump Threatens American Democracy" by William Cooper.]
Author: William Cooper
Title: Stress Test: How Donald Trump Threatens American Democracy
Stress Test: How Donald Trump Threatens American Democracy by William Cooper is a book made up of different published columns. In it, the writer focusses on four essential principles of American democracy. These are fidelity to the Constitution of the United States, respect for the rule of law, commitment to rational government and finally free and fair elections.
I found this book very informative. At first glance, the title of the book gave an impression that the writer is biased towards Donald Trump and sees him as a threat to the American democracy. However, reading through column after column, it emerged that while Donald Trump had depicted himself as the worst President of the United States in terms of democracy and the rule of law, his opponents the Democrats equally made heinous mistakes in trying to counter the influence of Trump.
William Cooper gives in-depth analysis of every situation on both sides of the divide. He doesn’t out rightly point a finger at the wrongs being committed but brings them forth with the counter efforts from the opposing side. In every area brought up, one is able to be analytically taken through the facts, assumptions, legal, constitutionality of and against the actions and the approach used to counter such. He keeps traversing to and from the past, present and the possible future of democracy of the United States. This gives a clear understanding if there is contravention of the American norms. The judiciary in the view of the writer through various examples given has remained a steadfast branch of government with rationale in its decisions in the face of the Trump era errors.
I did not come across any profanities. The editing was great as there are no grammatical or spelling errors. For one interested in the legal and contemporary political analysis of the Trump presidency and their implications on democracy, this book is a perfect choice. I give this book 5 out 5 Stars.
