W. Rebecca Wildsmith combines the energy of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple with a truly fascinating and unique tale about life and death in Hattie Vavaseur. It is a murder mystery, a love story, and a commentary on the afterlife, all through the eyes of the titular protagonist. Hattie departs a funeral and is driven to a mysterious house with an equally mysterious master. Suffering from memory lapses and surrounded by unique characters, 63-year-old Hattie must uncover the mysteries of the house and her circumstances. I can’t explain any more without feeling like I’m robbing potential readers of the chance to explore this world Wildsmith has created. I can only recommend picking up the book as soon as possible!

Wildsmith has a wonderful writing style that perfectly encapsulates the 1920s setting of Hattie Vavaseur. The plot is incredibly engaging and unique, with likable, interesting characters and a sense of mystery woven excellently throughout the story. The short length makes this a quick read; I read it in one sitting, and I could not put it down! I loved the way the characters interacted, how the plot unfolded, and how the characters developed so much in just 262 pages. It even has a good message that makes sense within the context of the book. Wildsmith is a very talented writer, and she clearly understands her characters and readers. I just can’t stop praising this book, from the writing to the pacing to the characters. Of the characters, my favorites would have to be medium Vamelda or her cross-dressing adventurous archer friend, Syd.

There is nothing I didn’t like about this book. I found very few errors, though that may have been due to it being quite dialogue-heavy (which helped it flow nicely). It was clearly professionally edited. I really loved this book, and it was very well-written and edited. Therefore, I think this book deserves to be rated five out of five stars.

I recommend this book to people who enjoy cozy mysteries, period pieces, and Agatha Christie’s work. It has no severe profanity, many discussions of death, some violence, and no explicit sex scenes. It’s very appropriate for anyone of any age who is comfortable with death and some violence.
