Review of McDowell
McDowell by William H. Coles is a book with a very intriguing story about a man who seems to have the entire world in his hands but then loses everything. His life becomes increasingly difficult, but as time passes, he learns how to adjust his life to live with the hope to recover from his current situation. The main character, Dr. Hiram, was a medical doctor who enjoyed mountain climbing in his free time. He vowed to climb every high mountain in Nepal after the death of one of his friends during a hike. He also had a son and a daughter, but due to the high demands of his job, he was unable to spend the time that he always wanted to spend with them. Dr. Hiram also had a wife who previously passed away, and she despised him since he was always stuck working long hours at his job. She even accused him of cheating on her, and this put a huge strain on their marriage. He also concocted a scheme with some of his friends to vote him president of an organization. As you can see, Dr. Hiram was kind of a shady man, and this made him a very intriguing character.
Overall, I really enjoyed the plot of the book. I liked that the book had medical aspects to it, but it was written in a way that people without a medical background could read and understand it. The plot also contained a lot of suspense that kept me interested with each passing chapter. I also liked how the author used the story to demonstrate the consequences of broken promises. We saw this after Dr. Hiram won the rigged election and he failed to fulfill the promises he made to his friends. Once they realized this, everyone turned against him, and this resulted in his lifelong struggle. I also liked how the book's characters were very well developed throughout the story.
There was honestly nothing that I did not like about the book. There were no grammatical errors or typos in the book. This is a testament to the exceptional editing that was completed with this book.
I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for all of the reasons I stated above. I thought this book was inspirational because Dr. Hiram stayed optimistic about his future no matter what his current circumstances were.
I would recommend this book to any reader that is interested in suspense. I would also suggest this book to any readers going through a difficult time. I think this book could be inspirational when teaching people the importance of staying strong during difficult times.
