My experience with audiobooks,com consisted of peaks and valleys. There some reasons I was very impressed with the website and the app I downloaded to my iPhone and others that made it difficult and not very user friendly. I took advantage of the 30 day free trial they offer for new users. I had never used this company before but have used other audio book websites with no interest in returning. The circumstances of my life have since changed between the two experiences and I feel that is one major reason why I enjoyed an audio book this time versus the last.

I signed up directly on their website after reading about how the program works. You do have to provide an email address and password to set up the log in. You then provide credit card information and a billing address so they can begin to charge you when your free trial expires. I began browsing through the options of books I was able to choose from; they give you one credit to apply towards one audio book of your choice.

I went with Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari. I immediately downloaded the app to my phone so the book would be more readily accessible. I never listened to the audio book through my computer or other device. When I downloaded the app I initially had trouble getting it to work. It would time out and then completely exit back to the home screen. After several attempts to get it to work with the same outcome I decided to restart my phone and did not have any issues after that. I purchased an FM transmitter for my car and was able to listen to the audio book while driving. I did most of the listening this way. The time of the book was a little over 6 hours and I found that I finished the book a lot faster than I would have reading a hard copy. (I also read about 5 books at a time which draws out my finish time for each.) There was never an issue with the audio book while I was listening. With the exception of the time I used the app after downloading, I didn’t have to restart the program and the app never timed out.

My annoyance with the website started after I finished the book and I was interested in finding out more about this membership I could possibly be paying for. The initial membership I would be charged after the trial period would be $14.95 per month that would give me one credit to purchase one audio book of my choice. It should be noted that they offer free books as well, but I could only find them on the app and not on their website. They also offer upgrades where you can listen to two books a month for $22.95 or have unlimited access to their entire collection for $24.95. Please note that these prices are not confirmed through audiobooks,com since I could not find any information on the website about the price of upgrades and had to do a search on Google. I found this information on a website called techcrunch,com in an article dated January 14, 2013.

All in all, I don’t think that an audio book subscription is really worth the money and the minor frustrations I found with audiobooks,com are enough for me to cancel before I am charged the monthly fee. But I did like the ability to listen to a book while I was driving and would make an effort to have that option available for any road trips that might be in my future. I would rate the program 3 out of 4 stars.
