[Following is a volunteer review of "28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir" by Poppy Mortimer.]
This is an engrossing book filled with humour. The author takes us through 28 horrible dates she went on in a very entertaining and light-hearted way. She has had experiences with all sorts of men, from those old enough to be her grandfather to those who fart excessively with no regard for those around them. She further goes on to let us know the lessons she has learned from each date, some of them shed light on attributes she didn't know she had while others taught her what men to avoid, all of which have helped shape who she is today. The lessons she learned remind her of stories and lessons her mother had tried to teach her in her youth but she didn't quite catch. I guess because experience is the best teacher.
The use of a variety of literary devices makes the reader feel like they are there every step of the way on each date she went on. You can feel every thought and emotion of the author through each horrible experience.
The book is very well edited, with no grammatical or spelling errors that I could find.
The book could also be recommended for younger audiences since not only does the author avoids using vulgar language in her writing but also forces the reader to use their imagination in places where she would have used curse words.
I would rate this book a 5 out of 5. I would absolutely recommend this book to others. It is simple to read and incredibly entertaining. The kind of book that you read while trying to unwind or lift your spirits as it will leave you in fits of laughter. It also helps those who have horrible dates feel like they are not alone and helps one reflect on their own experiences.
