McDowell is a literary fiction novel that follows the life of Hiram McDowell, a talented surgeon and a man driven by ambition. As a highly skilled and renowned physician, McDowell reached the pinnacle of his medical career. He is respected and revered in his field, but his arrogance and self-centeredness start to erode his personal and professional life.

Despite his professional success, McDowell's personal relationships suffer, and his family life becomes increasingly strained. He struggles to maintain a meaningful connection with his wife and children, focusing more on his own desires and accomplishments.

The novel delves deep into the consequences of McDowell's actions as his past decisions come back to haunt him, causing him to face the ramifications of his choices and the impact he has had on others. It becomes a journey of redemption and self-discovery as McDowell seeks meaning and purpose beyond his medical achievements.

William H. Coles excels in crafting complex and multifaceted characters, making the protagonist and other figures in the story feel real and relatable. Hiram's character is the summary of the tale of humanity. A selfish person who thought only about himself. Hiram had a unique way of showing affection to his loved ones. Losing a dear one takes something away from us. We should all learn to heal so it doesn't affect our relationship with others.

The novel explores themes of ambition, pride, family, and the consequences of one's actions, providing readers with plenty of material for introspection. Coles' writing style captivates readers with its vivid descriptions and compelling narrative. Some readers might find the protagonist, Hiram McDowell, to be unlikeable due to his flaws and self-centered behavior. However, this is intentional as it drives the novel's central themes and character development.

The novel tackles heavy themes and can be emotionally challenging for some readers. I found no negative aspects while reading. I found no errors while reading the book, indicating it was well-edited. I happily rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to lovers of action, drama, and mystery.

I enjoyed reading about the backgrounds of the characters. The author was able to give a proper backstory for the characters, which enabled me to bond with them.
