Review of Army Life

[Following is a volunteer review of "Army Life" by Darryl Jefferson.]
Army Life by Darryl Jefferson chronicles the author’s journey of pursuing his dream of joining the army. From an early age, he aspired to be part of the army, inspired by a video game, and his admiration for veterans and the respect they received. Despite facing challenges in convincing his parents and navigating acceptance procedures, his determination to join the army remained unwavering.
After graduating from high school, he was accepted into Pacific Lutheran University, where he joined the ROTC program, facing major challenges and personal struggles. The book delves into his journey as he eventually joins the army. Readers will discover whether this was an easy task for him, how long he lasted, and whether he achieved the life he desired.
I appreciate the author’s free writing style, eloquently describing various situations, offering readers a glimpse into his frustrations and reactions, which often seemed humorous to me. The book provides insights into the lives of serving officers, their conversations, and the psychological stress they endure. It is thought-provoking, offering a deeper understanding of the reasons behind soldiers’ drills, aggression, and even their experiences that deserve greater understanding.
Initially, I was uncomfortable with the frequent use of vulgar language and sexual tones in the book. However, as I continued reading, I realized their importance in providing a comprehensive understanding of the experiences. Despite finding one error, overall, it seems professionally edited.
As my initial dislike was discarded while reading further and finishing the book, I can say there’s nothing I disliked overall. I would give it a rating of 5 out of 5 due to all the positives stated.
I recommend Army Life to those interested in army tales and gaining insights into the inner workings. However, I advise sensitive readers to approach it with caution due to the presence of vulgar language and high sexual content.
