Review of Unicorns Know Magic

[Following is a volunteer review of "Unicorns Know Magic" by Charles Adkins.]
Unicorns Know Magic by Charles Adkins is a wonderful children's book. Four unicorns, Abby, Georgia, Bitsy, and Chase, find themselves living next door to a family with two young children. Amazed by the magical nature of the unicorns, they explore the world with them. From the mundane of school to cross-Atlantic trips!
The book is delightfully illustrated; each page is designed accurately but with a childlike effect. It felt deliberately designed to make children feel at ease and part of the book, allowing them to relate to the images immediately. Of course, the book contains much more than the illustrations, and the author ensures each page rhymes. This adds a good flow and poetic feel to the book, and when read out loud to children, it helps them stay connected and focused on the book.
However, it feels like the author has compromised at times by choosing to rhyme. Some of his word choices can be a little bit distracting and would not be my first choice if rhyming was not needed. However, this is a minor thing, and the overall effect achieved is worth those few awkward sentences.
That is the only negative I could find about the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and it is one I will add to the reading rotation for my child. The book is almost error-free and well laid out, with the pictures complementing the book and the placement of the writing never blocking or taking away from the illustrations. I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
The book is primarily aimed at younger children; it is short, taking slightly more than five minutes to read out loud. I would recommend this book for parents with children as young as 1 and as old as 7. It could be used as a great tool to introduce the concept and idea of rhyming to a younger child. The simplicity of the rhyming can be a great inspiration for children to try their own rhymes.
