A perfect honeymoon was all Tom Turbulo and his bride, Kelly, desired when they embarked on a trip to an opulent resort on an island in Honduras. But things took an unprecedented turn as fate had other plans for them, and they soon found themselves saddled with the heavy burden of thwarting a terrorist ploy against the United States of America. Were Kelly and Tom able to circumvent the activities of the terrorists amidst all the tumult? This book surely has the answer.

Dorothy Mercer’s E M P Honeymoon is an action-packed, humorous, and captivating novel with an engrossing plot that embodies several twists and turns. With the deployment of the third-person point-of-view, the author expertly keeps Kelly and her husband Tom at the epicentre of everything that transpires in this novel. The events begin to unfold after Kelly, without her husband, goes on a hike with other hikers on the island resort and decides to stop by an offbeat toy shop called La Pocilga to procure some piggy gift items for her nephews and niece. However, in a bid to find the shop attendant, she walks into a restricted area and is shell-shocked when she discovers that the shop houses a technological laboratory where terrorist plans are being hatched. Kelly is attacked by an unknown assailant and barely escapes. She then places a call to her brother, Senator Mike McBride, to inform him of the shocking development. Subsequently, it is revealed that the terrorists were sent by the leader of Korea to Honduras with the ultimate aim of launching an atomic bomb on American soil. These terrorists, however, are also now hot on Kelly’s heels as they seek to silence her. Kelly, together with her husband Tom, who came back to the shop to seek answers and discovered a big, locked shipping container in the back alley of the shop, must now join hands with allies such as a CIA agent and two private security experts sent from America to deal with the impending doom. The action is endless, and it resonates in every chapter. As the storyline progresses, questions are asked and answers sought.

One major aspect of this novel that stood out for me was Mercer’s impeccable ability to focus her lens on the myriad of characters without reducing the heightened tempo of the storyline. I was able to see what was unfolding from the different perspectives of different characters, and I had a vivid picture of their thought processes. Characters such as Jung Lo, who was to create the atomic bomb meant to be launched into America but was experiencing a crisis of conscience and who eventually installed a bug in the bomb's detonation code; CIA agent Steve, who was sent from America to Honduras to lend a helping hand to Kelly amidst her travails; and Sharon, one of the private security experts, whom the American government also sent to Honduras in the company of Agatha, her colleague, to help Kelly foil the plans of the terrorists. Notable mention must be made of Steve and Sharon because they took off on the wrong foot with a mutual feeling of antipathy towards one another before they began to develop synergy. This way, the author expertly ensures that in the midst of all the fast-paced action, there is room for romance to flourish. I also enjoyed the fact that this novel made me learn a few things I was oblivious to; for instance, I learned how far-reaching the use of electromagnetic pulses can be in moulding weapons of mass destruction. Additionally, I discovered that solar flares can have a devastating effect on the power grid. My eyes were also opened to the world of espionage and how adept spies are at what they do.

The dialogues in this novel were laced with humour at different intervals, and it was something I relished; it sure kept me absorbed while I was reading. The author’s skillful storytelling also portrayed the emotions of the characters in a fascinating manner; I could picture myself in the shoes of Kelly, Tom, Jung Lo, and Senator McBride. I enjoyed the transitions from chapter to chapter; it was relatively easy to keep track of the plot. The only thing I did not find likeable about this book is that, due to the array of characters that the author sought to blend into the storyline, there was little to no room for significant character development. Personally, I could only see glimpses of what the characters were like; it wasn’t in-depth to my satisfaction. However, this does not take anything away from how enjoyable this book was for me. For this reason and the other reasons stated above, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

The novel was thoroughly edited, which makes reading it worthwhile. I recommend this book to lovers of fast-paced action and humour because there is an abundance of them throughout. This novel also sheds light on information revolving around science and technology that can be used for educational purposes, so I recommend it to students and teachers with an interest in science. If the topic of terrorism enthuses you, the author gives some insight into how their operations are carried out.
