Hello. For my first review topic I was asked to read and review Audible Book of your Choice by Amazon. The instructions were pretty straight forward: download the app from Amazon, complete a free trial membership, chose any book and listen to it the whole way through before writing a review of how you liked the app. So, here we go.
The downloading of the app was easy and took little to no effort. If you already have an amazon account that is synced to a phone or tablet device, it’s basically a no brainer. I liked the color scheme and overall visual theme of the Audible. The background is black and grey with hints of orange. This is very ‘Night reader’ friendly, for those of us who read way into the late hours or just need a quick read to fall into dream land. Now, when you download this app, not only do you get a 30 day free trial, but you also get two credits that allows you to choose and download any two books for your listening pleasure. I am glad for this because the store choices are just overwhelming. I would not be able to just pick one book to listen to. In fact, before I even narrowed down and chose my first book I managed to add 20 books to my wish list. So, very happy about there being no limits on what books you can download.
Now, while Audible is very user friendly and generous of offering their services free for thirty days, I can’t help but notice what the monthly price is once the trial comes to an end. When Audible first came out, I believe the monthly fee was between ten to twelve dollars a month. In addition you receive one free book credit every month. All other books must be purchased. So, that’s twelve dollars a month, plus the additional cost of books you download after that one free credit. For me, I am going to say there is a 50-50 chance I will decide to keep this app and its membership after the 30 day period. Because as much as I like reading, I like saving my money even more. I could just as easily make a weekend trip with my child to the local library and check-out books to read. With this app, I will be spending a minimum of twelve dollars a month for one book, which results in around 200 dollars a year that I could be putting in the bank for baby’s college fund, and that’s only if I manage to resist the temptation of buying after the one book. I won’t resist. I will end up buying at least one additional book because Audible already spoiled me with a two book minimum mentality from the beginning, so God only knows what kind of trouble I will get myself in. Also, I just looked up Audible price on the internet. It is actually 14.95 a month after the trial.
So, to make this official, as much as I am tempted by the dark side to keep this app, for the endless book selection at my fingertips, I am just going to have to say no. I would recommend this app to someone who has no moral conflict about spending and has lots of time to really get your money’s worth out of the app. Like my brother, for example, a young man who has no children and works as a package delivery guy, spending ten plus hours driving around the city. He would certainly have no problem plugging his tablet into the stereo and knocking audio books down by the truck full, without a shred of guilt.
I give this experience a 3 out of 4
Have a wonderful day.
